Computing Workshops

The Center for Instructional Technology is currently offering 30 Standalone Workshops and 13 Courses. Our workshops are free to Columbia Staff and Faculty and all of them take place in the CIT classroom, room 811f in the 600 S. Michigan Building. Seats are limited. Clickers in your Classroom

TurningPoint audience response system allows students to participate in presentations or lectures by submitting responses to interactive questions. Students can answer questions in class and instantly see the class's votes. You can use it to engage your students in lectures or quiz them before a test. Use it to create a report in PowerPoint, or use it outside of PowerPoint to ask questions about anything on the computer screen. Clickers can be used with Macs or PCs.

Collaborate online using WIKIS

According to Wikipedia, "A wiki is a collection of web pages designed to enable anyone who accesses it to contribute or modify content, using a simplified markup language. Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and to power community websites." Wikipedia is an excellent example of a WIKI and the article discussing a WIKI was actually created as a collaborative effort of Wikipedia users. WIKIs can be used for variety of projects and are very easy to set up. Learn how in this workshop.

Create Music and Edit Audio with Garage Band

Garage Band provides you with the best way to record music on a Mac. You don't have to worry about your musical talent or lack thereof. Just use GarageBand's included loops, or try a combination of loops, software instruments, or any previous audio recordings you created. Now Garage Band is also an excellent tool for recording podcasts. Podcasting in GarageBand 3 puts you in the control room of your own full-featured radio station. And new iWeb integration gets your voice on the Internet in minutes.

Del.icio.us Bookmarking

Del.icio.us website is the biggest social bookmarking site. Social bookmarking is a method for Internet users to store, organize, search and manage bookmarks of web pages with the help of metadata. It doesn't sound too exciting at first, but social bookmarking is actually a concept that is sweeping the internet. In this workshop you will learn how to start your own Del.icio.us account and how to best utilize its features.

Digitizing Analogue Media: Stills, Video and Audio

Intro to GarageBand

In this workshop, you will get familiar with GarageBand's digital mixing board, learn how to create a song in MIDI and/or real audio, and then tweak your completed track. This workshop is taught by Fernando Jones, director of Columbia's Blues Ensemble, whose latest CD was done using GarageBand. Jones is a well-known, award-winning Chicago Bluesman and educator. He is also the last musician to be mentored by Willie Dixon, and has been featured on TV and in magazines internationally for his music and his academic pursuits. Intro to RSS and Google Reader

Real Simple Syndication (RSS) is something you hear about once in a while, and you might be wondering what exactly it is and why you should know more. RSS is actually one of the essential components sustaining what we now call WEB 2.0. You see RSS in news feeds, RSS is used in blogs and podcasts, and you can utilize RSS to keep current or to broadcast your message to thousands of people. This workshop will explain what exactly RSS is about and will introduce you to the most popular RSS aggregator - Google Reader.

Introduction to Color

This 3-hour workshop is an introduction to Apple's new color grading application, Color 1.5. Quickly and easily experiment with primary and secondary color grade adjustments for SD, HD, and even 2K projects. Color lets you preview the results at any resolution in real time. When you have just the look you want, render at stunning quality and blazing speeds. Color uses GPU-accelerated processing to produce RGB output in resolutions up to 4:4:4 with 32-bit float processing. Color makes it easy for editors to create signature looks for projects ranging from short video pieces to full-length theatrical films. This workshop will cover the basics of primary and secondary color correction and we will also work with node-based FX room, keyframing, and geometry.

Introduction to Google Docs

If you have then you know the challenges you face with keeping track of multiple versions, overwriting each other's data, emailing the document back and forth, etc. Google Docs presents a great solution. Simply create a free Google account and utilize Google Docs to keep your document "in the cloud" and invite people to collaborate. Learn how in this workshop.

Introduction to InDesign

InDesign delivers faster production workflows and a more fluid creative environment for designing professional layouts with sophisticated graphics and typography. This 3-hour workshop is an introduction to a powerful motion graphics application: Motion 3. Motion is a professional motion graphics design application that is a part of Apple's Final Cut Studio 2. Start animating right away with the easy-to-use tools and intuitive interface in Motion 3. You can see the results in real time as you work, and even adjust animation settings on the fly during playback. Be spontaneous. Explore. Experiment. Play. Just drag a behavior to the Canvas to set an object in motion, without any need to write expressions or manipulate keyframes.

Moodle Bootcamp

These sessions are specifically for faculty to receive hands-on assistance in putting Hand-outs, Web Links and Discussion forums online. Faculty should bring digital copies of their course materials with them to the Bootcamp. Anyone participating in the Moodle sessions must request that their class be converted to Moodle at least 36 hours prior to the Bootcamp. Podcasting and iTunes University

The iPod revolution is rapidly moving from delivering just music to being used in education as a portable learning tool. It allows access to lectures, speeches, audio books, etc. There are growing opportunities for teachers to create, distribute, and access audio and video learning materials. Columbia College has joined Stanford, Harvard, Berkeley and many other schools and started using Apple's iTunes University for easy podcast publishing. In this workshop you will learn the basics of podcasting and how to create and publish your own audio or video podcast with iTunes U.

MIMIO is an interactive board that allows for touch control over your projected screen but also allows for recording of whiteboard sessions that are conducted with regular dry erase markers. Video Editing for absolute beginners: Intro to iMovie Video Editing on a personal computer has never been this easy! The iPod revolution is rapidly moving from delivering just music to being used in education as a portable learning tool. It allows access to lectures, speeches, audio books, etc. There are growing opportunities for teachers to create, distribute, and access audio and video learning materials. This project-based course will introduce you to the shooting and recording techniques as well as editing of audio, enhanced, and video podcasts. You should come to the course with an intention to produce a podcast for your class and you will leave with at least one finished episode. By signing up for the Podcasting Course you are signing up for all 7 3-hour long workshops. Only participants who attend all 7 workshops and complete a project will earn the CIT Certificate. Part-time faculty who complete all 7 workshops and complete a project will also receive a stipend in the amount of $200.00. Full-time staff who also teach part-time in Columbia do not qualify for a stipend. In addition, the participants who complete a project and attend all 7 workshops will gain access to CIT's podcasting equipment and facilities to work on their future podcasting projects.

Using Faculty Advising Tools in OASIS (5 Day Online Course)

The purpose of this class is to introduce faculty to the advising tools that are available in OASIS, help faculty understand the role of the campus advisor and the role of the faculty advisor and to discuss FERPA guidelines and regulations. The class runs for 5 consecutive days and is entirely online. You don't have to come to the CIT lab - you can complete all of your work in the comfort of your own home or office. Plan to spend about 25 minutes each day on reading and hands-on activities. This class is appropriate for both new full-time faculty and senior full-time faculty who would like a review of the advising tools. At the end of this course, faculty will be able to: * Correctly locate and operate the online Advising Tools in the Academic Portal OASIS * Understand the function of each of the Advising Tools * Utilize the appropriate Advising Tool in a given advising situation * Discuss FERPA guidelines with different constituencies (students, parents, staff, faculty, etc.) * Apply appropriate FERPA guidelines in a given advising or consulting situation
