Computing Workshops

The Center for Instructional Technology is currently offering 11 Standalone Workshops and 5 Courses. Our workshops are free to Columbia Staff and Faculty and all of them take place in the CIT classroom, room 811f in the 600 S. Michigan Building. Seats are limited. Standalone Workshops

Advanced Moodle
Only 10 Seats

Moodle stands for Modular Object Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment and is being used more and more across the CCC campus for course content management in traditional face to face courses, hybrid learning and fully online courses. This 3 hour workshop will concentrate on adding rich content to your courses including multimedia, custom blocks and online tests. We will also examine advanced gradebook techniques using weighted mean of grades and scales to better identify student learning outcomes and take advantage of Moodle's full featured teaching tools.

Collaborate on documents online with Google Docs

Have you ever tried to work on the same Word document in collaboration with multiple people? If you have then you know the challenges you face with keeping track of multiple versions, overwriting each other's data, emailing the document back and forth etc. Google Docs presents a great solution. Simply create a free Google account and utilize Google Docs to keep your document "in the cloud" and invite people to collaborate. Learn how in this workshop.

Intermediate Moodle

Moodle stands for Modular Object Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment and is being used more and more across the CCC campus for course content management in traditional face to face courses, hybrid learning and fully online courses. This 3 hour workshop assumes you understand the basic tools and editing features in Moodle and will focus instead on creating and adding resources including Moodle Books and Activities, such as Forums, Assignments, Glossaries and more. We will also look at how Assignments and "Rated" Activities appear in the Moodle Gradebook and how to set up a standard grading system for your course.

Introduction to Moodle

Moodle stands for Modular Object Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment and is being used more and more across the CCC campus for course content management in traditional face to face courses, hybrid learning and fully online courses. This 3 hour workshop will show you how to log in to Moodle, set up your personal profile, manage basic course settings and upload documents, including your syllabus to your course page. We will also examine the basic tools used navigate and edit in Moodle.

Moodle Coursework and Gradebook

This workshop will provide an overview of creating Moodle Assignments and Gradebook Management. We will cover how to grade online and offline assignments and activities, including FORUMS, Journals, Tests and Glossaries. We will also look at how to weight grades using categories and other advanced grading features. NOTE: Part-time faculty will be offered a modest stipend for attending the above workshops. Full time staff and full time faculty are not eligible for this stipend. All workshops will be held in room 811F of the 600 S. Michigan Building.

Moodle Overview

Moodle is an open source Learning Management System (LMS) used on campuses and in remote learning settings worldwide. Columbia College Chicago is offering Moodle to instructors wishing to compliment their course with a wide array of online learning tools including journals, wikis, blogs, rss feeds and much more. This workshop will provide an overview of the Moodle interface, basic tools and resources. NOTE: Part-time faculty will be offered a modest stipend for attending the above workshops. Full time staff and full time faculty are not eligible for this stipend. All workshops will be held in room 811F of the 600 S. Michigan Building.

Oasis Coursework and Gradebook

This is a three hour workshop that will demonstrate how to set up coursework and gradebook in the Oasis LMS. Organizing your coursework and gradebook to match your syllabus is critical for a successful semester. Discover the power of grade weighting and advanced assignment management. NOTE: Part-time faculty will be offered a modest stipend for attending the above workshops. Full time staff and full time faculty are not eligible for this stipend. Oasis LMS Overview

This workshop will cover the basics and some advanced features of using the Oasis Learning Management System (LMS), from creating your online profile, adding syllabi, handouts and materials, to setting up your coursework, gradebook, custom content portlets, adding pages, and using copy course materials. NOTE: Part-time faculty will be offered a modest stipend for attending the above workshops. Full time staff and full time faculty are not eligible for this stipend. Using an Audience Response System in your Classroom

TurningPoint audience response system allows audiences and students to participate in presentations or lectures by submitting responses to interactive questions using a ResponseCard keypad or other hand-held/computer devices. Using a TurningPoint audience response system, your PowerPoint presentations become powerful data collection and assessment tools that collect real-time audience responses and dramatically improves productivity and results for your business or educational organization. Using MIMIO; an interactive whiteboard.

MIMIO is an interactive board that allows for touch control over your projected screen but also allows for recording of whiteboard sessions that are conducted with regular dry erase markers. In this hands-on training you will learn how to use a board like this and will have a chance to play with one in CIT's classroom.

Using Twitter in your Classroom

Twitter is a phenomenon that took over internet in recent months. This mini-blogging technology effectively reaches traditional internet users as well as on the go cellphone junkies. Twitter can also have many applications in your classroom. In this workshop you will create your own Twitter account and learn how to utilize this exciting new technology in your classroom.

5-Day Final Cut Pro Camp

The 5-Day Final Cut Pro Camp is designed to give beginners solid fundations in editing video content digitally using Final Cut Pro 6. Final Cut Pro is a professional editing software that has been used to edit films like "Cold Mountain", "Intolerable Cruelty", documentary "Spellbound", TV Show "Scrubs" and many more. You will learn the most recent version of the software, released in May '07 Final Cut Pro 6. You will also be introduced to the accompanying applications - LiveType and Soundtrack Pro.

The iPod revolution is rapidly moving from delivering just music to being used in education as a portable learning tool. It allows access to lectures, speeches, audio books, etc. There are growing opportunities for teachers to create, distribute, and access audio and video learning materials. This 5-Day long course will introduce you to the shooting and recording techniques as well as editing of audio, enhanced, and video podcasts. By signing up for the Podcasting Camp you are signining up for all 5 3-hour long workshops. Only participants who attend all 5 workshops will earn the CIT Certificate. In addition, the participants who attend all 5 workshops will gain access to CIT's podcasting equipment and facilities to work on their future podcasting projects.
