Computing Workshops

The Center for Instructional Technology is currently offering 3 Standalone Workshops and 9 Courses. Our workshops are free to Columbia Staff and Faculty and all of them take place in the CIT classroom, room 811f in the 600 S. Michigan Building. Seats are limited. Standalone Workshops

Moodle Basics Workshop
Only 10 Seats

Moodle is a powerful new alternative to the Oasis LMS here at Columbia. Get on board and learn the latest in teaching technology. This two hour workshop is designed for beginning Moodlers and will cover how to set up your profile, course settings, and class participants. In addition, you will learn how to add course resources, activities, assignments and how to use the Moodle gradebook.

Use CIT's room to work on your own project.

Use CIT's room to work on your own project. Up to 5 people at a time can reserve this 3 hour time period to work on their curriculum-related digital media projects. You can work on one of our 17 inch MacBooks and use many of our pro applications including Final Cut Studio 2, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Flash, etc. We have all the tools necessary for high quality podcast production. Feel free to use our Snowball microphone for audio recording or our DV camera for video recording. Take advantage of the Intuos3 Wacom tablet for greater control in design and image manipulation. If you want to incorporate images in your podcast you can scan your photographs with our scanner. Use our Final Cut Pro keyboard to take advantage of the clearly marked keyboard shortcuts and built in jog wheel and shuttle knob. We also have a USB Audio keyboard in case your project involves music creation. You can also use this time to learn new software. We have multiple book and video titles available to you that teach most popular applications. Feel free to spend that time learning new tools. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THE FOLLOWING At this point we do not provide any support. You do have to already know the tools you are planning on using. The books and DVDs in the room are available for you and will often asnwer your questions. Please keep in mind that this time is NOT to be used for checking your email, grading papers, or just maintaining your OASIS class. The open labs have internet access and Microsoft Office. You can find a quiet spot in the library to grade your papers. The CIT's lab is only for digital media related projects where advanced hardware and software is required. You do have to show up at the beginning of the 3 hour time period to be let into the room. If you are late there might not be anybody around to let you in. The 5-Day Final Cut Pro Camp is designed to give beginners solid fundations in editing video content digitally using Final Cut Pro 6. Final Cut Pro is a professional editing software that has been used to edit films like "Cold Mountain", "Intolerable Cruelty", documentary "Spellbound", TV Show "Scrubs" and many more. You will learn the most recent version of the software, released in May '07 Final Cut Pro 6. You will also be introduced to the accompanying applications - LiveType and Soundtrack Pro.

The iPod revolution is rapidly moving from delivering just music to being used in education as a portable learning tool. It allows access to lectures, speeches, audio books, etc. There are growing opportunities for teachers to create, distribute, and access audio and video learning materials. This 5-Day long course will introduce you to the shooting and recording techniques as well as editing of audio, enhanced, and video podcasts. By signing up for the Podcasting Camp you are signining up for all 5 2-hour long workshops. Only participants who attend all 5 workshops will earn the CIT Certificate. In addition, the participants who attend all 5 workshops will gain access to CIT's podcasting equipment and facilities to work on their future podcasting projects.

By signing up for the After Effects Workshop Series you are signining up for all 5 3-hour long workshops. Only participants who attend all 5 workshops will earn the CIT Certificate. Part-time faculty who complete all 5 workshops will also receive a stipend in the amount of $200.00. Full-time staff who also teach part-time in Columbia do not qualify for a stipend.

Learn the basics of DVD Studio Pro 4. DVD Studio Pro is a professional DVD Design application. This Workshop Series will focus on various methods of designing interactive menus but you will also learn about creating subtitles, commentary tracks, slideshows, multiple angles, surround sound, and video compression.

By signing up for the DVD Studio Pro Workshop Series you are signining up for all 5 3-hour long workshops. Only participants who attend all 5 workshops will earn the CIT Certificate. Part-time faculty who complete all 5 workshops will also receive a stipend in the amount of $200.00. Full-time staff who also teach part-time in Columbia do not qualify for a stipend.

Flash Workshop Series is designed to give beginners solid fundations in designing highly interactive web pages with Adobe Flash. Flash allows designers and developers to integrate video, text, audio, and graphics into immersive, rich experiences that deliver superior results for interactive marketing and presentations, e-learning, and application user interfaces.

By signing up for the Flash Workshop Series you are signining up for all 5 3-hour long workshops. Only participants who attend all 5 workshops will earn the CIT Certificate. Part-time faculty who complete all 5 workshops will also receive a stipend in the amount of $200.00. Full-time staff who also teach part-time in Columbia do not qualify for a stipend.

Podcasting Course

This project-based course will introduce you to the shooting and recording techniques as well as editing of audio, enhanced, and video podcasts. You should come to the course with an intention to produce a podcast for your class and you will leave with at least one finished episode. By signing up for the Podcasting Course you are signining up for all 7 2-hour long workshops. Only participants who attend all 7 workshops and complete a project will earn the CIT Certificate. Part-time faculty who complete all 7 workshops and complete a project will also receive a stipend in the amount of $200.00. Full-time staff who also teach part-time in Columbia do not qualify for a stipend. In addition, the participants who complete a project and attend all 7 workshops will gain access to CIT's podcasting equipment and facilities to work on their future podcasting projects.

Final Cut Pro Workshop Series is designed to give beginners solid fundations in editing video content digitally using Final Cut Pro 6.
